Shawnee National Forest
Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois offers almost 300,000 acres of natural majesty for you to explore, including hiking trails through the oak-hickory forests, tranquil scenic drives, camping, rock climbing, and every kind of outdoor recreation you could want. Explore the famed rock formations at Garden of the Gods wilderness area, or make it more of an educational trip by delving into one of the forest’s archaeological sites.
Hoosier National Forest
Drive about 1.5 hours northeast, and you’ll be in the heart of the Hoosier National Forest. With an emphasis on environmental stewardship, the forest includes areas such as the Pioneer Mother's Memorial Forest, which preserves one of the last old-growth forests in Indiana, and Hemlock Cliffs, featuring waterfalls and sandstone rock formations. More than 260 miles of trails allow hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders plenty of options for recreation and exploration.
Knobstone Trail
At 60 miles long, Knobstone Trail is Indiana’s longest footpath and offers some of the best views in the state. Expect occasionally rugged terrain and steep ascents (hiking poles recommended). There are multiple trailheads that have parking areas – you can arrange ahead of time to be picked up at a different trailhead and driven back or your car.
